Firefighter injured at Syracuse house fire

Syracuse, N.Y. — A firefighter injured his arm during a house fire Sunday evening in Syracuse’s Strathmore neighborhood, officials said.
The fire at 119 Beverly Road was reported at about 6 p.m.
Firefighters arrived to find smoke throughout the house, and fire in the basement, according to Deputy Fire Chief Nick Pagano. He said it only took a few minutes to put out the initial blaze.
But the fire had spread through the interior walls and old exhaust system in the house. The home was originally built in 1890, county records show.
Multiple extra engines were called to the scene to assist with the fire. At one point, flames appeared on sections of the roof.
It took about an hour and 50 minutes to fully put out the fire.
The fire dealt “severe” damage to the second and third floors, Pagano said. That could be a sign the fire got a “head start” and had been going for a time before residents called 911, he said.
One firefighter injured his arm and was treated on scene by paramedics, Pagano said. He was later taken to the hospital.
Pagano did not immediately have more information about the injury, but anticipated the firefighter would be on leave for a time.
The people living inside the house were able to get out on their own, Pagano said. Firefighters helped rescue a few pets.
Four people were displaced by the fire. They received assistance from the American Red Cross.
The fire was determined to have started in the house’s basement, according to a news release late Sunday evening from the Syracuse Fire Department. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
