When working this was a scale to help detect if an item is solid gold or merely gold-filled or plated.
Normally when buying a very thick gold chain we cut a link in half to see if it's gold all the way through. However some items, such as gold coins and
nam
e brand chains should not be damaged in this way. Also some people selling items to us do not want the item damaged if it is not gold because if we don't buy it then at least they can still wear it as costume jewelry.
It's not pleasant to cut an item up and then give it back in unwearable shape because it turned out not to be gold. This scale helps detect gold (and silver) percentage very well without
destroying the item.
